      LLM graduate with Distinction(UCL 法学院优秀毕业生),Freshfields 伦敦总部的 offer(富而德英国 “魔术圈” 五所之一,全球历史最悠久的顶级国际律所),她一步一步从实习生做到高级律师。

“Close the door.

“Four years. You lasted longer than I expected.”(四年,你待得比我预想的久。)

“You say that like you wanted me gone.”(您这话说得好像巴不得我走似的。)

That first term, I wasn't sure you'd make it to Christmas. You barely spoke. You sat in the back. You looked—” he gestured vaguely, “—like you were carrying something.

“But then something happened.”(但后来有什么东西变了)他在她对面坐下。“Second term, you started talking. Not much. But when you did, everyone listened. Because you'd done the work. Three times over.”(第二学期,你开始发言了,不多,但只要你开口所有人都在听,因为你把功课做足了,三倍地做足了。)

      “I had to.”(我必须这样。)沈止说,“I couldn't afford to fail.”(我输不起。)

“Yes,I think you can't afford to lose eight. And then you got the highest mark in the class. Distinction. And I thought: right.

“When Freshfields came calling—” McKinley 笑了,“I told them: take her. Never let you down”(后来富而德来要人的时候 ——” “我告诉他们:收了她不会失望的)

“You got me in.” 她说,“They told me later—you called someone.”(是您把我送进去的。”

      McKinley 摆了摆手:“A phone call.

McKinley 沉默了一会儿“The year I started teaching,”他轻声说, “I left someone behind too. Thought I was doing the right thing. Thought I'd go back. Never did.”(“我开始教书那一年,” “也把一个人留在了身后,我以为自己做对了,以为会回去,可是再也没有。”)

“Thirty-seven years I've been doing this. And I've never stopped wondering: what if I'd gone back? What if I'd—” (三十七年了。

“You're not me, Zoe. You're not going to make that mistake.”(你不是我,止,你不会犯那个错。)

      “Phillips. Remember that name?”(菲利普斯。

McKinley 笑了,“He owes me. From the LSE days. I called him, told him: my best student needs to go home.

“He did the rest. Talked to Shanghai. Talked to your boss—what's his name? Pearson? Made sure the transfer went through.”(剩下的事他办了,和上海那边沟通和你老板 —— 他叫什么来着?

McKinley 耸耸肩,“I just made the first move.”(我就是起了个头。)

      “Thank you.Professor,for—

McKinley 打断了她,伸出手按在她肩上:“You were the best student I ever had.”(你是我教过最好的学生。)

他的声音有点粗哑,“Not because you were the smartest—though you were. But because you had something to prove. To someone. To yourself. That kind of fire—you don't see it often.”(不是因为你最聪明 —— 虽然你确实聪明,而是因为你心里有要证明的东西,向什么人,向自己,那种劲儿并不常见。)

他收回手,转回窗边,“Go prove it. And don't come back until you've done whatever it is you came here to do.”(去证明吧,没做完你该做的事,就别回来了。)

I will.”

她顿了顿:“I'm sorry that thing you said.

      “Me too.”
