Her name is Fang Min. You stay here tonight. She will stay with you."(她叫方敏。
"The drawings are quite nice. How about we go for a walk?"
"Who else is in your family?"
"Parents? Brothers and sisters?"
"Just casual conversation."
"My family is in Boston. I have two older brothers and one younger sister."
"Just the four of you?"
"My parents are in business."
"Do you miss them?"
"I do. But writing letters is not convenient."
"It is the same for everyone."
"How long have you been writing?"
"What?"
"Articles. Reports. How long have you been doing this?"
"Almost ten years."
"Ten years?"
"Then you must have written quite a few good pieces."
"Not necessarily. I used to write for fun when I was young."
"Writing,"
"some people are born with the talent, and some people write their whole lives and never get it right. Which one are you?"
"I used to think I was the first kind. Later I realized it might just be luck."
"Good luck is a talent too."
"Have you ever written anything?"
"Me? I write reports. Work summaries. That does not count as writing."
"Reports are writing too."
"That is not the same. Our reports are written for the people, and they are not meant for others to read."
"I heard that when you wrote a certain article, you seemed to have used a quote from Dante. What was it?"
"I cannot quite remember,"
"It was in Italian, I think? Do you know Italian?"
"A little," 她说,
"But that time... I used it wrong."
"Oh?"
"I quoted Dante, in Italian. I thought it would make the article seem more... authoritative. But I had never actually read the original. I copied it from somewhere else, and I copied it wrong."
"That day, my editor called me into his office,"
"He opened an Italian-English dictionary and made me look up every word myself. He did not say a thing. He just sat there watching me read the translation."
"The quote was about betrayal, and I used it to describe courage."
"That is pretty harsh."
"Harsher than scolding."
"Once you finish scolding, it is over," 周志祥说,
"But making you look it up yourself—that is what really hurts."
"That editor of yours,"
"What is he like as a person?"
"He is very... stubborn. Once he makes up his mind, ten oxen could not pull him back."
"Is he good to you?"
"I mean, how does he treat his staff?"
"Good."
"How so?"
"He... never hits or scolds his employees. When they make mistakes out in the field, he has never berated them. His tone is always very serious, but he is always there, standing firmly behind us."
"But he is strange. One day he was drunk, and he held my hand and said he was afraid of the dark, and told me not to leave. He said he had been like that since he was a child,"
"He cannot sleep without a light on. Even a small lamp, a candle, anything will do."
"One night I was working late, and he fell asleep at his desk. The light went out. When he woke up... he was trembling."
"I stayed,"
"I lit the lamp again. I stayed with him until he fell asleep once more."
"You think he is strange too, don't you?"
"Let us go," 他说,
"A little further."
"Do you joke around often?"
"What?"
"You and him. Do you joke around?"
"Occasionally."
"Can he take a joke?"
"It depends."
"Most of the time, no."
"My friend says he is quite amusing and jokes with him often."
"Has he never joked with you?"
"Cat."
"Cat?"
"Once I was late. Very late. He was furious. I told him—" 她笑出了声,
"I told him a cat had followed me home, and if I did not close the door I was afraid of trapping it, but if I closed the door I was afraid of hurting it, so I could only wait for it to leave on its own."
"Of course he did not believe me. But the next time I was late, he did not ask why. He just looked at me and said, 'Where is the cat?'"
"Now every time I am late, he says that. And I answer, 'Still at the door.'"
"That is enough,"
"We have talked quite a bit."
"He asked me to tell you," 周志祥说,
"That he is well. And he hopes you are well too."
"From today, you are no longer a detained person. Comrade Fang Min will arrange your lodging. You may move freely within the base area. But you must inform her before going anywhere."
"Hey! Can I interview you tonight?"
"Of course. After dinner."
